Cambodia’s Air Travel Set to Surge with New International Airport
Cambodia has officially inaugurated the Techo International Airport, a £1.4 billion redevelopment located 20 km south of Phnom Penh. This state-of-the-art facility is poised to transform the nation’s aviation landscape, enhancing tourism, trade, and international connectivity.
A New Era for Cambodian Aviation
On September 9, 2025, Techo International Airport commenced operations, replacing the older Phnom Penh International Airport. The inaugural commercial flight, Air Cambodia K6611 from Guangzhou, marked a significant milestone, complete with a traditional water salute upon arrival. The airport’s opening ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Hun Manet and Minister Mao Havannall of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation.
Impressive Infrastructure and Design
Spanning approximately 2,600 hectares in Kandal and Takeo provinces, Techo International Airport boasts a modern terminal designed by Foster + Partners. The terminal features a central garden, duty-free shops, dining facilities, and a solar farm, emphasizing sustainability and passenger comfort. With 22 gates and the capacity to handle large aircraft such as the Airbus A380, the airport is designed to accommodate future growth.
Expanding Capacity to Meet Growing Demand
Initially, the airport is equipped to handle 13 million passengers annually. Plans are in place to expand this capacity to 30 million by 2030 and up to 50 million by 2050, positioning Techo International Airport among the world’s largest airports. This expansion is expected to significantly boost Cambodia’s tourism sector, which saw a 23% increase in international arrivals in 2024. The development aligns with the government’s strategy to enhance infrastructure and attract foreign investment.
Strengthening Cambodia’s Global Connectivity
The opening of Techo International Airport underscores Cambodia’s commitment to becoming a prominent player in regional and global aviation. The facility’s advanced infrastructure and strategic location are expected to attract international airlines, increase tourist arrivals, and facilitate economic growth through improved trade links.
Techo International Airport represents a significant leap forward in Cambodia’s aviation capabilities, setting the stage for a new era of connectivity and economic development.
