Air Canada Enhances Regional Fleet with Dash 8-400 Upgrades
Air Canada is embarking on a significant modernization of its regional fleet, focusing on 25 De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft operated by Jazz Aviation under the Air Canada Express brand. This initiative aims to elevate the passenger experience with enhanced comfort, connectivity, and design.
Comprehensive Cabin Redesign
The upgrade includes the installation of next-generation ergonomic seats from Expliseat, featuring improved padding, integrated device holders, and tray tables. Each aircraft will maintain its 78-seat configuration, with the new seating expected to be completed by mid-2026. Additionally, the cabin interiors will undergo a redesign to reflect Air Canada’s mainline aircraft aesthetics, incorporating Canadian-inspired colors and textures.
Industry-First In-Flight Connectivity
In a groundbreaking move, Air Canada will introduce free Wi-Fi onboard Dash 8-400 aircraft—an industry first for this aircraft type. Starting in October 2025, passengers flying from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) to Montréal and Ottawa will have access to fast, free Wi-Fi, sponsored by Bell. This service is part of Air Canada’s broader plan to equip its fleet with next-generation connectivity systems. The airline has already fitted 97% of its mainline Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge aircraft with similar Wi-Fi capabilities. The full fleet-wide transformation is expected to be completed by 2026.
Phased Implementation
The refurbishment program will be rolled out in phases, with the first aircraft upgrades commencing in October 2025. Air Canada Express, operated by Jazz Aviation, serves as a vital component of Air Canada’s strategy, connecting communities across Canada and linking businesses to the global network.
Commitment to Passenger Comfort
Mark Nasr, Executive Vice President & Chief Operations Officer at Air Canada, emphasized the importance of regional services in connecting Canadian communities. He stated, “This innovative project reflects the pride we take in serving customers with care and class.” The upgrades aim to provide passengers with a heightened level of comfort and convenience, making even the shortest flights feel special.
